Platinum Card® or Starwood Preferred Guest® cardholders, if you’re contemplating closing one of these cards, then before you cancel your credit card, you should call AMEX to see if there are any viable offers (waived annual fee or bonus points) for you to keep the card, otherwise known as “retention bonuses.” Keep in mind that AMEX doesn’t stick to one staple retention offer and it’ll vary based on card and your card-membership. There have been cardholders who reportedly got a higher retention offer than even the standard bonus offers, so if you’re interested, be sure to read on!

“American Express is quite known for their prowess in the Retention Department and time in-time out, American Express does offer some exceptional retention bonuses. I try to call Amex every 90 days or so, just to make small talk with their CSR. Early afternoons work best, because that’s when most of the more friendly CSR’s are working. Ask for Goodwill points or extra miles…”

Final Analysis:
Before you close your Platinum Card® or Starwood Preferred Guest® Cards, remember that American Express has perhaps one of the best retention services known to banking history. There’s a chance that you could walk out of this with a fee-waiver (highly unlikely on the Platinum Card) or a retention bonus. There’s no surreal risk from asking either and only takes minutes out of your day. Try asking for the 30,000 MR point or 7,000 SPG point offer and sometimes, they’ll offer you a lesser bonus or nothing. This is highly YMMV, if you’re currently not interested or this post doesn’t pertain to you then be sure to check out our full list of Credit Card Bonuses for all of your credit card needs.
