*UnionPay Notice*
Apparently, these pioneer UnionPay cards launched in the United States operate on a completely different functionality from the Union Pay version of cards that operate in China. Most of the POS machines in Mainland China will have a hard time rendering these cards and the fact that you cannot add your IBCB Unipay card to AliPay or WeChat which is a widely acceptable payment method, it could prove to be of limited usage for those that travel to mainland China often.
Conclusion:
When you sign up for the ICBC Preferred UnionPay Gold Card, you could earn $50 in cash bonus when you make $1,000 in spending within the first 3 months of account opening. This card earns 1% everywhere with no foreign transaction fee, which is pretty much a flailing rewards structure, however the card is redeemed primarily because of it’s UnionPay network capabilities. Apparently, it is “widely accepted in China,” however, we’ve noted that this variant of UniPay differs from the original and will receive it’s fair shares of nonacceptance, especially in Mainland China.
