Plastiq’s Bill Payment Services was previously coding as Lodging/Travel via VISA, which was a phenomenal win for those that have a Chase Sapphire Reserve and earned 3X on travel from it. However, it seems that times have changed, with Plastiq no longer coding as Lodging/Travel as of June 3, 2017.
Can’t say for sure what is going on but it seems like either Chase is tying up loose ends and recoded something on their end to make it virtually impossible for the Sapphire Reserve to get 3X on travel from Rent and Mortgage payments via Plastiq or Plastiq is closing up the loophole that coded Rent/Mortgage as Lodging/Travel. Being as optimistic as possible through such a inconvenience, it may be better that Plastiq stops the 3X travel rather than raising the rates.

Plastiq Coding on Lodging/Travel:
Rent/Mortgage payments was previously coded via Plastiq as Lodging/Travel, however it seems that some changes were made either on Plastiq or Chase’s end. It’s necessary to keep in mind that the fee to pay bills, rent or mortgage with Plastiq is 2.5%. There’s a good chance that the Bank of America, Capital One, or the AT&T Card could possibly still have the travel coding eligible, if and only if this was a change within Chase’s jurisdiction. Definitely some hard times considering that I know many of you use Plastiq’s services, especially using your Chase Sapphire Reserve’s for an easy 3X on Travel.
Final Analysis:
Plastiq holds such an exceptional image with their services with a not-so-bad 2.5% rated fee to pay bills and occasional bonuses. In April, we discussed how Plastiq coded VISA as Lodging/Travel which was a big plus for those with Chase Sapphire Reserve since you earned 3X on travel through Rent and Mortgage payments. However, as of June 3, 2017, it seems that Plastiq will no longer be earning 3X on lodging/travel with CSRs. This could be either renditions on Plastiq or Chase’s part and is definitely a huge bummer, however, it’s best that such an event like this happened rather than Plastiq raising the rates again.
